Music - Open Source Method and Exercise Database

I'm looking to collaborate with some music teachers and savvy web programmers to create a website that serves as an open source database of user created and submitted musical exercises, studies, and literature.

Who is this for?

My initial thought is that this would serve as a social-education link between music educators, students, and parents. For example, instead of purchasing a method book for use in a beginning band class, a teacher could go on this site and compile daily or weekly practice sheets. It would be as simple as the teacher dragging the exercises and information she wants, and then having the site convert it to a PDF for easy download, printing, emailing, or posting on another site.

As it becomes more involved, students could go on the site, view and download additional exercises and information. It gives them a chance to customize the experience and it also gives teachers the ability to customize and differentiate learning for students.

What would the site do?

Aside from stitching together musical exercises and songs, the site would be entirely open source. Students and teachers can upload their own content, submit recordings and reviews, and share practice tips with others. The level of customization and expansion is endless.

The goal is elegant organization of a variety of musical exercises, techniques, and literature that teachers and students can use in their musical education needs. Some specific features would be (eventually):

  • Library of exercises ranked by difficulty.
  • Users creations their own exercises.
  • Suggestions for development, improving specific skills, etc.
  • Database of basic tunes with various key signatures.
  • Transposition of all parts.
  • Related ensemble pieces either on the site or recommended.
  • Compile whole books, share those books, and evaluate students' progress.
